Middelburg

Middelburg possibly dates back the the 8th or 9th centuries as a fortified town to protect against the Vikings. A monastery was built around 844 and it is still there. Most of the moats built around the city still exist to this date with the Sies Molen (windmill) still sitting next to it.

Part of the city was bombed during World War II and there is a monument on Nieuwe Burg street in part of the area that was bombed by the Luftwaffe in May of 1940 near the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) which is located about the center of the city. Many of the bombed out buildings, as well as the streets were rebuilt in much the same places as they were prior to the war.
