Oosterbeek

Oostebeek is a small village located a short distance to the west of Arnhem and dates back to the 10th century.

World War II brought the Germans into the area during the occupation and the surrounding areas were used as rest and refit areas for German units in the latter part of the war. Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery came up with the idea of capturing key bridges across the Rhine River and others to help facilitate the Allies on their march into Germany. Operation Market Garden had airborne forces drop near bridges in Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem to wrest control of the bridges from the Germans. While the bridge at Nijmegen was captured, the bridge at Eindhoven was blown up by the Germans forcing the Allies to build a Bailey Bridge so troops and armor from XXX Corps could cross so the troops could head to Arnhem

The British 1st Airborne Division commanded by Major-General Roy Urquhart landed in the area during Operation Market Garden and ended up fighting German troops under the command of Field Marshal Walter Model who was at a hotel not far from the landing sites. Heavy fighting in Oosterbeek did major damage to the villiage which has since repaired. The Hotel Hartenstein, headquarters for the 1st Airborne Division was turned into a museum and features a marble floor and doctor's coats stained with blood, a piece of wallpaper with the score of how many Germans were killed on it as well as a door with a note scribbled on it. There is also a diorama featuring weapons, models of houses and vehicles used during the airborne operation. Oosterbeek is also home to the Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Memorial Cemetary.
